Cheney Lobbies for Torture

Funny, but this AP story hasn't shown up in the liberal American MSM. Not so in the rest of the world. From the Toronto Star:
WASHINGTON — U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney made an unusual personal appeal to Republican senators this week to allow CIA exemptions to a proposed ban on the torture of terror suspects in U.S. custody, according to participants in a closed-door session.

Cheney told his audience the United States doesn’t engage in torture, these participants added, even though he said the administration needed an exemption from any legislation banning "cruel, inhuman or degrading” treatment in case the president decided one was necessary to prevent a terrorist attack.

The vice president made his comments at a regular weekly private meeting of Senate Republican senators, according to several lawmakers who attended. Cheney often attends the meetings, a chance for the rank-and-file to discuss legislative strategy, but he rarely speaks.

In this case, the room was cleared of aides before the vice president began his remarks, said by one senator to include a reference to classified material. The officials who disclosed the events spoke on condition of anonymity, citing the confidential nature of the discussion.

The United States doesn't engage in torture, but Cheney wants to leave that option on the table just in case we change our minds? Just in case that Wal-Mart in Des Moines is found to be an Al-Queda target and some of them Muslims in Iowa get rounded up they might need to break their knee caps to find out in which isle the bomb has been placed?

Now let's just forget for a moment the visuals from Fox's hit series "24" of Jack shooting people in the knees and remember that's Hollywood, not reality. As McCain knows from experience, torture doesn't work, often generates false information, isn't American, and what else... oh ya TORTURE IS AGAINST THE GENEVA CONVENTION.

But the Vice President of the United States is on the hill lobbying for an exemption for torture. Speechless.
